Baroque Garden in Nieborów

The formal (French-style) Baroque garden in Nieborów was designed in the last decade of the 17th century, probably by Tylman van Gameren, and extended in the 1770s by Szymon Bogumił Zug. Native tree species predominate, but the most imposing are two plane trees planted around 1770.

In the 1770s a new garden style known as the English landscape garden reached Poland. It had emerged in England at the beginning of the century and gradually spread across much of Europe. The English style stood in clear opposition to the artifice and regularity of Baroque gardens, favouring free, atmospheric compositions paired with sentimental or symbolic staffage — architectural forms and structures alluding to antiquity, the Middle Ages, rural life, and often also to exotic overseas models. The style also evolved in parallel with the philosophical, ideological and aesthetic shifts of the age, from sentimental forms towards the vision of the Romantic garden.
